Certificate of Professional Development in Peri-Operative Nursing Care

Aims and Summary.

Peri Operative nursing is an area of specialisation that deals with the care and management of patients of all ages before, during and after a surgery. Over the years there has been a significant rise in the number of patients with different surgical procedures requiring specialist care and management. Many hospitals both in the private sector are investing on expanding their services and setting up specialised Operating theatres with all the state of the art equipment. This course will contribute to the training of nurses to manage the ever-growing patient numbers and giving everyone the best possible care available and training nurses to deliver an international standard of Peri-Operative nursing care.

 

This course incorporates the candidates to provide care for the patient undergoing various methods of anaesthesia. The principles of asepsis and microbiology will be emphasized to create a greater awareness in ensuring a safe environment for the surgical patient. It also addesses ethical, moral and legal issues as well as specific considerations for various types of procedures.

The aim of this Course is to
deepen knowledge and skills within nursing and surgical treatment for patients that are nursed within perioperative care and facilitate an evidence-based attitude as nurse
develop advanced clinical nurses who will be able to utilize and apply their cognitive skills to ensure the safety of the surgical patient.
assist the nurses to function effectively as independent advanced clinical nurses and be members of the multi-disciplinary health care team in the field of Operating Theatre Nursing Science.

Course Commencement Applicants may commence this course when the required number of applicants for the course have been registered.

Course will be offered in 3 intakes per academic year – March, July and November.

Pre-requisites and co-requisites Applicants should have successfully completed a 3-year recognised nursing qualification.

 

Applications will be encouraged from non-standard entrants with relevant experiential learning and evidence of continuing professional development.

 

All candidates should have access to a General Theater and Surgical Ward where they will have to complete 120 hours of clinical placement under supervision.

 

Candidates who have not completed their prior education in English are required to have achieved IELTS 6.5 with no component lower than 5.5. Other accepted measures of English language are; TOEFL-iBT: at least 12 for listening, 13 for reading, 21 for writing and 18 for speaking or PTE Academic: at least 50 for each of the 4 components or OET: at least B for each of the 4 components or Cambridge C1 Advanced test: at least 169 in each of the 4 components or CEFR Scale: at least B2 level.

 

Candidates must possess basic knowledge in IT including; MS office packages (MS Word and MS PowerPoint), internet and email.

 

All candidates must be available to allocate the required study time over a consecutive period of 32 weeks (8 months) from the date of course commencement.  This includes online interactive lessons and as well as self-study.
