Certificate of Professional Development in Paediatric Nursing Care

Aims and Summary.

Sri Lanka has a high rate of New-born babies delivered prematurely or children who are suffering from health problems such as birth defects, infections, or heart deformities and other diseases. As hospitals invest more and expand on specialised paediatric units such as NICUs and more wards dedicated to caring for children, the need for nurses specialised in this area are required. This course will contribute to the training of nurses to manage specifically paediatric patients whilst working to improve the standards of care in both the public and private sector hospitals in Sri Lanka.

 

The course incorporates the nursing concepts of health patterns applied to the child with normal and alterations in health. Emphasis is on the needs of the child from one month to adolescence.

The aim of this Course is to
assist nurses in developing expertise and in-depth understanding in the field of paediatric nursing.
help candidates to appreciate the child as a holistic individual and develop skills to function as a neonatal and paediatric nurse specialist.
enable nurses to meet the complex needs of infants and children with their families requiring care.
to develop knowledge and skills to support the family unit at times of severe illness and stress.

Course Commencement Applicants may commence this course when the required number of applicants for the course have been registered.

Course will be offered in 3 intakes per academic year – March, July and November.

Pre-requisites and co-requisites Applicants should have successfully completed a 3-year recognised nursing qualification.

 

Applications will be encouraged from non-standard entrants with relevant experiential learning and evidence of continuing professional development.

 

All candidates should have access to a paediatric ward where they will have to complete 120 hours of clinical placement under supervision.

 

Candidates who have not completed their prior education in English are required to have achieved IELTS 6.5 with no component lower than 5.5. Other accepted measures of English language are; TOEFL-iBT: at least 12 for listening, 13 for reading, 21 for writing and 18 for speaking or PTE Academic: at least 50 for each of the 4 components or OET: at least B for each of the 4 components or Cambridge C1 Advanced test: at least 169 in each of the 4 components or CEFR Scale: at least B2 level.

 

Candidates must possess basic knowledge in IT including; MS office packages (MS Word and MS PowerPoint), internet and email.

 

All candidates must be available to allocate the required study time over a consecutive period of 32 weeks (8 months) from the date of course commencement.  This includes online interactive lessons and as well as self-study.
